21st Infantry Regiment
The soldiers of the 21st both past and present are known as “Gimlets.” According to the regimental history, the Gimlet nickname traces its roots to the inter-service athletics of the early 1920s.
Fort Ward (Alexandria, Virginia)
One of the largest forts in the Defenses of Washington was Fort Ward in Alexandria, Virginia. Construction of Fort Ward began in July 1861 immediately after the Union defeat at First Bull Run.
